How to move zones from 5.2 to 6.0
Question asked by terri hawkins - October 11, 2016 at 9:00 AM

I created a new server with the newest software and need to move the zones I have from the old location, which was running 5.2. My new server is running 6.0. I can't find instructions for what files to copy. From the C:\ProgramData\JH Software\Simple DNS Plus\ZoneFiles directory I moved over _zonegroups.xml, _zones.sdzdb and named.root, but my new server does not have the same number as my old one does, even after restarting the service. I can no longer locate the "upgrade" instructions. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any assistance is appreciated.

You need to copy ALL the files and folders from under "c:\programdata\jh software\simple dns plus".

If you install v. 6 "on top of" a v. 5.x installation, it will automatically convert the configuration and data files.

However if you first install and run v. 6 on a new machine - without having the files from v. 5.x in place - and you then copy the files in later - it will ignore those file.

The way to fix this is to stop the Simple DNS Plus service, delete (or rename) the "sdnsplus.db" file (in "c:\programdata\jh software\simple dns plus"), and then restart the service. This will make it think that it is a fresh install, and it will look for the v. 5.x files.
