Resolving Names in VPN
Question asked by Jay - March 25 at 4:50 PM
Answered
Hello,

I am running a VPN server in windows 10, so I can access my network from anywhere. As you know, I can only access computers in my network, if I use their IP address.

I would like to use the computer name instead, netbios. If I had a windows server, I could use WINS but I don't. I have been reading I could use a DNS server to do it instead, but I can't figure out how to do it with SIMPLE DNS PLUS. Could you please help? I would love to buy a licence, but can only do it if I can make it work during the trial time.

Thank you!

You would need to configure the VPN network client to use the DNS server on the network that your are connecting to (and of course run such a DNS server). This could either be through the VPN client configuration or DHCP.

For the DNS server (and DHCP), you can of course use Simple DNS Plus.

I am sure I can do that... but how? In another thread someone asked you the same thing... and even mentioned the configuration they were trying, which was exactly what I thought:
Made some entries in DNS Plus (running on server2) but this does not help (in Primary Zone \ Forward Zone):
network.local => type NS, TTL 10800, server2
network.local => type SOA, TTL 10800, server2 [2017010401]
server1.network.local => type A, TTL 10800, ip-address
server2.network.local => type A, TTL 10800, ip-address
In the example above, it works if you use the address \\server1.network.local but the goal would be to use just the computer name which is \\server1, without the .network.local
Is this possible with SDP?
