DNS Migration Tips
Question asked by matt motasoft - April 11, 2014 at 6:03 AM
I've been set the joyous task of migrating our primary DNS Nameserver to completely new hosting.
I've managed to successfully setup 2 other Secondary Nameservers so the whole task of actually moving data to a new server isn't that daunting. I just don't know if there's any gotchas I should look out for as we will be setting this Primary Nameserver on a completely new IP address.
The 2 Secondary Nameservers will remain active during the migration.
I've read this article that explains I need to get the Server Registration IP changed. Has anyone had any experience of doing this through 123-reg as that is our current registrar?

You do need to update the DNS server IP registration with your registrar.
Each registrar has a slightly different procedure for doing this (I am not familiar with 123-reg), but generally you just enter the new IP address in some web-form, and the update should take effect very quickly.
Assuming that you are using Simple DNS Plus as the primary DNS server, you can follow the data backup/restore procedures listed here: http://support.simpledns.com/kb/a30/x.aspx
